PG19 Hacktober: 31 Days of New Features: Wrap Up with Our Top picks, Community shout-outs & Postgres gratitude

PG19 Hacktober D-Day: Wrap Up with Our Top picks, Community shout-outs & Postgres gratitude.

What a Month.
Over the last 31 days, we’ve explored the depth, power, and beauty of PostgreSQL 19rc1, one feature (or a part of) at a time.

From performance wins and observability tools to security upgrades and SQL standard enhancements, PG19rc1shows us why PostgreSQL continues to be the world’s most advanced open source database.

Let’s close this series by celebrating:

  • Our Top 5 favorite features
  • The PostgreSQL contributors who made it happen
  • And a community that keeps Postgres thriving

PG19 Hacktober Top 5: Our favorite features

Here are 5 features that received the loudest applause from readers, developers, and contributors during the series, presented as shout-outs:

  • Under the Hood: lz4 TOAST Default, Better Timing, and Hardware Acceleration (AVX2, ARM CRC32C, SIMD hex) (Read our Part1 & Part2 on THA)
  • Autovacuum Grows Up: Parallel Workers and the New Table-Priority Scoring System ( Read our blog3 on AVP)
  • Logical Replication Sequence Synchronization & pg_createsubscriber ( Read our blog 18 & blog 20) on LRCS)
  • PostgreSQL I/O Performance Improvements: Smarter Read-Ahead & Visibility Map ( Read our blog 2 & blog 10 on AIO)
  • pg_plan_advice: Taking the Wheel of the PostgreSQL Planner & pg_stash_advice: Applying Plan Advice Automatically per Query ID ( Read our blog 11 & blog 12 on PA&SA )

Shout-Out to the PostgreSQL Contributors

PostgreSQL 19rc1 wouldn’t exist without this incredible community of developers, reviewers, testers, and doc writers.

To the PostgreSQL Global Development Group, extension authors, release testers, and all the silent heroes of git.postgresql.org:
Thank you. Your commitment, rigor, and generosity inspire open-source communities everywhere.

Meet the PostgreSQL Contributors

Release Notes for PostgreSQL 19

PostgreSQL 19 contains many new features and enhancements, including:

  • Under the hood: lz4 is now the default TOAST compression, so large values are compressed faster with no extra setup. Better timing and hardware acceleration (AVX2, ARM CRC32C, SIMD hex) speed up CRC checks, hex encoding and other everyday low-level operations on modern CPUs.
  • Autovacuum grows up: autovacuum can now use parallel workers, and a new table-priority scoring system decides which tables need attention first. Heavily bloated, busy tables get vacuumed sooner, which means less manual tuning and fewer surprises in production.
  • Logical replication that just works: sequences are finally replicated, so migrations and failovers no longer leave sequence values behind. With pg_createsubscriber and wal_level=replica, you can set up logical replication without a server restart.
  • Smarter I/O: smarter read-ahead and visibility map updates cut unnecessary disk reads, and I/O worker processes now scale automatically with the workload instead of needing manual sizing.
  • Planner control: pg_plan_advice lets you steer the planner toward the plan you want, and pg_stash_advice applies that advice automatically per query ID, so you can fix a bad plan without changing application SQL.

All packed into one major release.
